Facebook Payday Review | Peter Koning’s Newest Product Fails to Impress

Okay, I admit it. When it comes to most social networks like Facebook and myspace, I am pretty much dumbfounded on how to connect and make money via affiliate marketing. I admit it. I also know that I am not alone. Many a internet marketer has tried to turn the popular social networks into cash cows only to fail. A few have been able to break the barrier using CPA ads and some have been able to fool myspace people into joining a dating site with the impression that some girl (or guy) is waiting in the wings. But aside from the very random sale here and there, most internet marketers have not been able to crack the “myspace” and “facebook” make money code. This is why I was interested in taking a close look at FaceBook Payday.

Basically, nearly half of his report is nothing more than what you would expect to get from a blogger who is trying to churn out content for his site about FaceBook. And while I am probably a bit more jaded than the average marketer (seen it and done it before), I hope that Peter doesn’t expect to win the pulitzer prize from this.

Facebook Payday is basically a packaged deal that comes with two ebooks (one of which is over 100 pages long) and a series of audio interviews from people who have supposedly made money using Facebook as their primary vehicle. I have to admit that I absolutely hate audio. I find it very boring and it normally takes me about 2 minutes to lose focus and start to do other things. Luckily for me, it author, Peter Koning, included full transcripts so that I could listen to music (much more interesting) while perusing the material.

Like I said, I was interested in this particular product because the ebook is one of the first that deals with how to market to the huge facebook market. And I thought that with a price tag of $97 that there would be at least one nugget of new intormation that I could grab.

The Facebook Payday Sales Pitch:

Now I understand that these sales letters always want to give you as much reason as possible to want to buy. And ridiculous claims are normally the status quo. However, with Facebook Payday, there really wasn’t much sales but the pitch page read more like an expose on how facebook ads are different from adwords. However, as usual, there were some promises in regards to the product.

One in particular peaked my interest in regards to one of his ebooks….

The Facebook Payday Report—A complete jam-packed 101 -page e-book that spells out the secret to marketing on Facebook. This manual instantly shows you the best way to use Facebook to start earning money fast

Judging from this claim you would automatically assume that this report could be a great resource of tips in regards to marketing on Facebook, right? Well, we will examine this in a second….

Another bold claim that Peter makes is here…

With this kit, you’ll have everything you need to make money using the Facebook Payday secret.

Now I am a skeptic when it comes to these claims but like I said, the fact that this is the first ebook on how to market to facebook people, I wanted to see if Peter has the stuff to back up his claims. Let’s examine each part of his series….

The First Facebook Payday Book- The Facebook Payday Primer

The first part of FaceBook Payday is a 24 page ebook that goes over what Facebook is, the demographics of Facebook and the differences between facebook, twitter, craigslist, linkedin and MySpace. There is absolutely nothing in this book that is particularly groundbreaking and the report reads like a college paper. To be honest, I could hardly read through it as the information was boring at best with very little information on what it would take to actually make money with facebook.

However, the first book was a primer so I thought, “no biggie…the real information should be coming from the actual report, not just the primer.”

The Second Book- FaceBook Payday

This book is the 101 page ebook that Peter claims in his sales letter is supposed to “spell out the secret to marketing on Facebook”. Those were his words, not mine, mind you. And for $97, I am expecting Peter to really get to spelling.

When reviewing products, I like to first scan through to see what the angle the product is shooting from and then give it a good thorough read. I am going to state for the record that this book hardly impressed me at first glance. In fact, the thought that kept going through my head was “did I really just pay $97 for this shit?”…..

However, I can’t try not to make that harsh of a judgement upon my first read. So, I decided to go through this guide with a fine toothed comb. The first thing that caught my eye was his warning on page 6. Without posting it verbatim, basically this is the part where Peter states for the record that FaceBook Payday was not a get rich quick scheme and anyone who thought it was should take a second look at it. Here is one of the keypoints I want to quote and I will explain why I am quoting this in a second:

Although I do cover some key Facebook features, this product is also not meant to be a “how-to guide to using Facebook”. There’s other guidebooks available and even Facebook itself has extensive help features.

The reason why I point this quote out is that my impression of this “massive” 100+ page report is that the meat of the book is nothing but a how-to guide on using facebook. In fact, the first 36 pages (once you get past the usual introduction fluff) is nothing more than a guide to what to do and what not to do. In this report, Peter gives some stellar tips like:

  • Don’t spam
  • Observe Copywright laws
  • Only use one account…
  • Learn Facebook’s terms and conditions
  • ect.ect…

Do you catch my drift here? Basically, nearly half of his report is nothing more than what you would expect to get from a blogger who is trying to churn out content for his site about FaceBook. And while I am probably a bit more jaded than the average marketer (seen it and done it before), I hope that Peter doesn’t expect to win the pulitzer prize from this.

It gets better though….pages 36-42 continues to churn out the hits with some more very profound and thought provoking tips in how to gain ‘friends’ on facebook like:

  • Add people that you already know first….

Really? I would have never thought to start with that first……

  • Join User Groups
  • ect. ect.

The point I am making here is that up to this point, I have read (and re-read) FaceBook Payday and nearly half of the book is nothing more than fluff. And remember….this is supposed to be the real deal on how to make money with Facebook.

The majority of the second half of Facebook Payday left me with just as negative of an impression. But this time, it was all basic marketing principles that all internet marketers should be using from the get go.

There are some good things with FaceBook Payday that I would like to Address….

Now, this said, there was something that I found interesting in his book that involved how to use the search function to drill down to people who like certain things. In other words, you can drill down to find individuals who are ga-ga over Star Wars or that have an interest in guitars. However, once again, this is hardly groundbreaking and at best should be filed under “how to find your market” 101.

Also, in the book, Peter reveals how to use raw data in order to determine if a product is marketable in Facebook. Now what I find interesting is that since the majority of users are college age, you could actually use this data to find profitable markets for people in the college age bracket. The site is called the Saunders Log and is worthy of a look….

In Short the Facebook Payday book left me more than a little underwhelmed.

Or using a baseball analogy, I was hoping for a homerun and instead got a foul. The Facebook Payday report itself could be good for someone who wanted to investigate how FaceBook worked and the many ways to make money on Facebook but it stops there. There are no plans to follow. Just very general advice on marketing. And given the fact that this book was supposed to show the secrets of making money online with Facebook and that the cost of it was higher than most books in the make money genre, most who read it who are already schooled in marketing techniques will be quickly considering a refund.

The FaceBook PayDay Interviews

The final part of Facebook Payday is a series of interviews (8 to be exact)with many who are making money with FaceBook. The sales pitch claims that after reading what these guys have to say, you should be able to begin making money with Facebook. But do they actually work?

If you just listen to the interview with the “gym rat”, Mike Geary, you’ll be able to start making money almost immediately

After reading this, I decided that the first interview to start with was the one that I should be able to start making money almost immediately….the Mike Geary interview.

Facebook Payday Interviews- Mike Geary

For those of you who don’t know who Mike Geary is, he is the ebook author of the very popular diet book, 6 pack abs. (on a side note, this is one of the many products that I promote over numerous diet and weight loss sites I own).

To summarize, the interview basically details how Mike uses the Facebook ad network to drive sales for his product. This is really nothing new and anyone who has used adwords before will be already know most of the stuff that he talks about. In one part of the interview, Peter asks Mike if he has any tips he would like to give, which Mike responds:

I guess starting out, I’ll have to think back. I mean, I would say, just be careful with your click cost. Set your budget low at first. Yeah, forget about me talking about going from $50 to $1000. You might even spend $10 a day……What works best for me with my product is I make it NOT look like an ad…..

Once again, hardly groundbreaking and not the solid foundation that you would expect from a claim that you would be able to start making money immediately with….

Facebook Payday Interviews- Ron Reed

The next interview that I read (I read the transcripts rather than listen to the audio) was the interview that Peter did with Ron Reed.

To summarize this interview, Ron Reed talks about how he fosters and builds relationships using Facebook and how he has been able to make money going this route. As a real estate agent, Ron Reed was able to find other realtors as well as people selling their homes and began building a relationship with them. It was a good interview but there wasn’t one piece of advice that I don’t think that any list marketer wouldn’t already know (what Ron was doing was essentially the foundation of what list marketing is).

I am not going to give a brief on all 8 of the interviews but I will say that while all of them are good, (I really thought the shining light of the bunch was the interview with Paul Renner), most dealt with what I consider to be marketing 101 principles. And while it may appear that I am pooh poohing the book as a whole, I am really not. While I personally think that the book is good for beginners of marketing, I simply think that the Facebook theme of Peter’s product is just to try to cash in on those marketers that are looking for a way to market to facebook people.

And this is the problem. While the packaging of the FaceBook PayDay may attract a larger number of buyers than a title like “marketing for beginners”, the reality is that it is simply not for those of us who actually know a thing or two about internet marketing. In fact, most of the tips and tricks that Peter Koning doles out is really nothing more than common sense when it comes to dealing with any social network, never mind only Facebook.

While it may seem like I am being excessively harsh on this product, understand that with a price point of $197 that is knocked down to $97 if you give up your information, you have to expect more than you would from a product thatis $47. And the fact that there is literally nothing of note that I would consider extraordinary, this would make this book a definite no-go.

On a side note, if you are interested in things that actually work from someone that actually markets to facebook and is willing to share what he does, you can check out these links….These were all written by NickyCakes who primarily promotes CPA offers. Some of these still work. Others have way too much competition to work now. However, you can get the idea of how to do it and some alternatives as to what you can do.

I agree about the audio products. Normal people are not all star speakers. What a waste of time listening to them, as opposed to speed reading a well edited transcript.

The list at the bottom is Jack’s TurboTrackback tool in action, n’est-ce pas? I don’t really care for the effect.

  2. Leo on June 2nd, 2008 4:01 pm

Yeah, the links at the end of this post are Jack’s Tool and I haven’t decided whether I like it or not at this point. As far as speed reading transcripts, it is by far the quickest way to getting from point A to point B in the least amount of time. Plus, I can pretty quickly decide whether I will be getting anything out of it or not rather than have to listen to 15 minutes of audio crap before I realize it is junk.

  3. Peter Koning on June 3rd, 2008 4:46 pm

Hi Leo - I’m sorry to hear you were not impressed with the product. For experienced FB’ers and intermediate internet marketers I would suggest it’s not a perfect fit, but even from those groups I’ve had positive reviews for the $77 investment, which includes future updates and a teleseminar with Reed Floren.

I’m glad you did find some gems in there although it sounds like you are quite experienced already.

I think you might have had a different angle if you viewed it from the target market, which is the regular entrepreneur trying to figure out the best way to approach Facebook and people trying to determine what business model is best for them. You also left out the flowcharts and business models, which is a key to the product.

    Regards,
    Peter

  4. Leo on June 4th, 2008 8:14 pm

Thanks for responding Peter. I have to admit that I am a little more than jaded when it comes to marketing products and I did like some things that you had to say (I mentioned a couple points). I was more taken back by the price point of your product as I normally expect quite a bit from higher priced products and yours is in that category since the bulk of it comes from a book.

Facebook and the other social sites remain an enigma when it comes to marketing to these folks and I was eager to read through your manual for some insight into what you and others are doing. However, after reading it, it kind of gave me the impression that most of what you are selling is essentially marketing 101.

Now, would it be good for someone who wants to tap into this market that doesn’t know much about marketing in the general sense? Sure. The tips and basic layout of your presentation would give the beginner marketer some place to start, definitely. However, wouldn’t you agree that a more advanced marketer, say someone who has been making money online for a few years, find this a little beneath them (rhetorical question)?

  5. Peter Koning on June 4th, 2008 10:43 pm

    Hey Leo appreciate the followup.

I can’t resist answering even a rhetorical question :) I would suggest that all marketers - even advanced ones - get on board the social media train. It’s not just another “bright shiny object” that many of us get distracted by. I really think it’s changing business as we know it - more transparency.

I’ve heard from advanced marketers complain about how their subscribers just don’t respond any more. Many of those “advanced marketers” are NOT on facebook or twitter and need to catch up or get run over.

There’s huge opportunities out there just trying to help people understand this stuff. And helping bigger companies figure out social media is also a big untapped market.

Most “advanced marketers” are just treating social media like another marketing channel. That’s totally not the point.

So if you’re an advanced marketer and don’t plan on getting FBPD based on this review I’m not here to force it on you. But you could still be my friend on Facebook and see what’s going on. That’s cool too.

    Cheers,
    Peter
