Google Massacre Reviewed…

At the time of this writing, Google Massacre is number 10 and number 5 respectively at ClickBank in 2 categories and because of this, I think it warrants a review.  After all, after the Google Nemesis review, this author is beginning to believe that only shit products actually sell.  Let’s take a look at it…

Take a look at the Free Report by the authors of Google Massacre by clicking here…

Google Massacre is written by Andrew X and Steven Lee Jones and the sales page is a slick one, obviously one that has been done by professionals.  Usual rhetoric here…..the big claim headline, the proof, bullets and finally testimonials.  As an aside, the testimonials come from big name and up and coming gurus who have written other ebooks….Names like… Eric Rockefeller, Dylan Loh, Rob Benwell, and Chris Mcneeney.  (Just an FYI- these guys are all in on it together, promoting each others stuff back and forth like a private good old boys club.)

So, now that we have the run down, what is Google Massacre, what does it claim to do…and most importantly, are the techniques even feasible in the first place?…let’s take a look…

The psychological triggers that Google Massacre is hoping to hit is the “us vs. them” trigger which in this case, the “them” is other advertisers.

Google Massacre is a how to product that goes into the pay-per-click market and claims that by using their methods that you can dominate your competitors.  The book is extremely long, probably one of the longer e-books that I have run across in awhile, charting in at almost 200 pages.  It is so long, in fact, that reviewing this one was actually a daunting task that I have been dreading for two weeks.

The Google Massacre does have shtick:  The book claims that by utilizing their “S-C-A-L-P” method, that the reader can easily dominate and make money.  Here is the run down of the method…

  • Start Up

  • Conversions and Calculations

  • Assessment

  • Leverage

  • Performance

-First section of Google Massacre-

Start Up

When I first dug into the book, my initial reaction was an “oh no…not again” reaction.  The reason for this was that I have seen a ton of PPC adwords books in my day and usually most are the same rehashed bullshit products…you know…how to get started with adwords, ect.  And the first phase of Google Massacre was just that…a how to for those who are brand new to adwords.  The Start Up part (or “S”) is nothing more than a this is how to set up your adwords account section, loaded with screenshot fluff (the newest kind of fluff that the gurus use to pad their books).

As an experienced marketer, this was not even worth a scan although I understand what the authors are doing.  They have written the book supposing that the reader has absolutely no knowledge of adwords.  Therefore, rather than miss the key parts of the beginning, they are basically taking the reader by the hand and leading them throught the process.

This is cool if you are brand spanking new.  Not so cool though if you have a clue….

The “S” section covers:

  • How to sign up for adwords
  • How to set up an adwords account
  • How to build your first campaign
  • Other misc. stuff such as the content vs. search network, ad scheduling, position preference, ect.

-Second Section of Google Massacre-

Conversions and Calculations

The second section of Google Massacre covers some of the more “hated” things that most marketers have to deal with….conversions and calculations.  The book even mentions that they think the reader would be surprised that they would come to this so quickly (before they even started a campaign).

I understand why the authors have covered this so quickly though.  The bottom line is that you could have the best ad in google possible but if your landing or sales page stinks, you will just be feeding the google monster your money.

The first part of the second section, the authors go into detail about what a good sales page should have (there are 5 bullets) as well as a couple tips the advertiser should not do when it comes to choosing affiliates.

The second part of this section is really more of a “back to basics” section which details how to write ads that actually convert.  If you already own one of the other adwords tutorial books, then this section will feel more like a re-hash of stuff already out there.

The rest of the section is more basics that most PPC marketers are already aware of.. In fact, the first two sections are really nothing more than a prelude to the book.  They serve as a way to “catch beginners up” before they start to unleash their “secrets”….or that is what the book claims.

At this point, I do have a somewhat minor gripe with the book.  I wish that the authors had thought a little more of the intermediate marketers and made the beginner’s section a book all to itself.  I know.  Minor but still, it would have saved me the time of scanning for new material.

The first two “beginner’s sections” took up roughly a third of the book (61 pages).

-Third Section of Google Massacre-

Assessment

From the Book (pg. 62)

“Yes, A is for Assessment. This component is elemental and non-negotiable. Without it, even the best-laid PPC plans and campaigns will eventually flounder.
They will flounder and ultimately fail because you are not working to a guided methodology. Without thorough and insightful assessment, you may as well be flinging your money around in the dark, just hoping it might connect with a winning ticket!”

The Third part of the book starts to get more interesting.  This is where the the book claims that it is “time to join the pros“.

Google Massacre on Assessment (taken from the book):

“They will flounder and ultimately fail because you are not working to a guided methodology. Without thorough and insightful assessment, you may as well be flinging your money around in the dark, just hoping it might connect with a winning ticket!”

Coming right out of the gate, the authors states that he knows the reason why people lose money in their PPC campaigns.  The reason?  Because most marketers don’t understand that marketing is a science. And what do scientists do?  They TEST.

From the Book (pg. 64)

“As Google = Science, then
Scientific Method + Scientific Testing = Scientific results = Increased ROI and Profit = YOU MAKE MORE MONEY!”

Now, we are getting to the meat of things and the REAL reasons why most PPC marketers fail.  The bottom line is that if you aren’t split testing your ads, then chances are if you are making money (and the is a big if..if you aren’t testing) chances are you aren’t maximizing your earnings if you aren’t performing tests.

On a side note, it should be noted that marketing is a science complete with its own mathematical formulas and if you aren’t into doing math, then you are probably playing in the wrong game…..

The author of Google Massacre take their time with this, making this a perfect book for those who really want to understand the methodology behind creating ads that convert.  It is one thing to be a good copywriter…it is a completely different beast to create the perfect ad.  Split testing is one of those “necessary evils”.

The author skims the surface of this methodology, giving the reader the basics in a way that they should be able to understand how the pro marketers actually build an ad campaign.  Google Massacre basically takes you behind the scenes of how the process works.

If you aren’t new to split testing and the jargon associated with it, then this will probably be old news. Myself, I split test almost everything.  Still, the section is jam packed with useful information that a newbie marketer needs to know in order to create a winning campaign.

Other notable highlights in this section include…..

  • The bell curve theory- (Once again..split testing)
  • Niche Application of Split-Testing
  • Dynamic Keyword Insertion
  • The “Google Massacre” Bidding Rule Book
  • Other miscellaneous testing procedures

Like I said, this is a really solidly dense section that has some of the more practical points to marketing…and I don’t just mean via the pay-per-click model although this focuses primarily on that form.

-Fifth Section of Google Massacre-

Leverage

Taken From the Book (pg.119)

“…the easiest way to build an asset rich business is to start creating LEVERAGE!
That’s right, the ‘L’ component of our S.C.A.L.P. key stands for LEVERAGE, and this is where Google Massacre gets down and dirty. It is in this section, that we show you how to ramp up your earnings, build a kickass business, and absolutely dominate your niche.”

This is the fifth and final section of the Google Massacre.  I know.  What about the “P” part, right?  Well, let’s just say that that part is primarily fluff that I will discuss after this section (you will see what I mean)….

This section, the authors of Google Massacre actually go over some very sound techniques that they use to make insane profits through the pay-per-click model.  I can attest that 3 of the 5 work personally although the other 2 look like they could work, in theory at least (I may test them at a later date).

Without getting into the what makes each technique tick, I will give you the “schtick” line of each…

  1. The “Not-So-Unbiased” Review Technique…
  2. The “Laser List and Affiliate Product Targeting” Technique…
  3. The “Crappy Vendor Profit Rampage” Technique….
  4. The “Geographical Targeting on Steroids” Technique….
  5. The “Naughty but Nice Buyer List” Technique….

You gotta love “gurus” with their jargon and memorable phrases.  That said, this section has some very good detailed examples of splash and review pages that work.  The author does a very good job going over each technique in detail in a way that even the average beginner marketer can understand.

I know that many of you who buy this book will be searching for one of those “get rich quick” techniques.  This section, while not necessarily the “slam dunk” in terms of getting rich quick techniques, is probably the closest thing that you will get.

That said, the techniques are an exercise in practicality and I believe that anyone who actually employs just one of them successfully will be very happy with the results.

-Fluff Section of Google Massacre-

Performance

The final section of Google Massacre is nothing more than a fluff section and probably the shortest part of all the sections.  Basically what it says is that you have all the necessary techniques, the only thing to do now is to actually employ them.

You know the saying…you can’t get anywhere without actually acting on it.  Well, it sounds like a no-brainer but how many of you reading this right now forget about the “take action” part?

I really understand why the author did this section though.  Think about it….if his method was the S.C.A.L.P method, without the “p”, it would be S-C-A-L…..and that wouldn’t make sense at all….

-Google Massacre-

Final Thoughts

I know it is going to sound cliched but I actually like Google Massacre and think that this would be a perfect compliment to a new marketer who is investigating the pay-per-click model as a way to make money online.

While I was a bit annoyed by the first 61 pages of beginner stuff, I understand that Chris X was not wanting to leave anyone behind by jumping past the beginner sections of adwords.  From an intermediate marketer’s standpoint, Google Massacre also has a few things to offer.

While a lot of this book will be old news to many of the advanced ppc marketers, there are several things that I read that served as very good reminders that I had previously forgotten as well as a few things that I intend to employ into my own pay per click campaigns.

From an aesthetic point of view, the book reads very well, flowing from point to point seamlessly and once I got into the meat of the book, I spent an hour immersed in the book.  This says something, given the fact that I probably read a book a day and spend much of the time skimming rather than actual reading.

The price of the book is $77 and in this reviewer’s opinion is well worth the money, especially if the person buying the book doesn’t have any “good” adwords books on their hard drive.  I say “good” because most of the adwords books currently on the market aren’t worth the time to read.

I will go on record to say that I suggest this book.  I found the book a very easy read and packed full of good information that is “practical” for a change.  You won’t find the usual hypey garbage that is normally associated with the gurus.  And although the ad copy of Google Massacre may suggest hype in the same vein of most of the gurus, the information warrants the price.
