Keyword Research Tools- Why you Shouldn’t Pay for One

I know that a lot of folks that are pushing affiliate products like keyword elite and what not are not going to like this but in my 5 short years of making money online, I have found very few keyword products that I would consider “unique”. The reality is that most pull data from the same places. Let’s examine this further.

Before I go into my tirade into how I really feel about keyword research tools, I want those of you who are looking for that magic bullet to simply forget about it. Keyword research sucks. Doing proper keyword research sucks even more. That said, if you are using a keyword tool like keyword elite, don’t bother to send me hate mail about how wrong I am in calling this product useless because I’m not. I am simply stating for the record that the data it pulls from is already out there and freely available. In other words, most keyword research tools are simply regurgitating the same data that other research tools grab. I know this because over the past 5 years I have owned a dozen or so of these tools, including keyword elite.

The point I am making is that if you are using a research tool and are happy with it, keep using it. However, if $100 or $200 is too rich for you, then check out this free research tool which incidentally many of the more popular tools have simply rebranded and sell it for a small fortune.

This tool won’t grab the KEI numbers for you or determine if the keyword is going to be marketable or profitable BUT it will give you the great beginnings that every marketer needs as far as finding keywords in. (I may do another report on how to determine profitable niches later).

Here are a couple unconventional ways you can use this program. I actually briefly go over this in the video. As some of you may know, I am a BANS junkie. I have dozens of BANS sites that go over several niches. Now obviously, I can’t know everything about everything and don’t have the time to educate myself on things such as cigars (I have a BANS site). So, I basically need a crash course in everything cigars if I intend on ranking high for long tail keywords and cashing in.

So here is what I do:

  1. I first go to eBay and do a broad search on “cigars”.
  2. Great, I get roughly 400 listings, so I know that this may generate a little traffic for me, provided I rank for the items related to cigars.
  3. I dig a little deeper by adding some criteria in the “options” menu. For instance, I will almost always choose to show only results that have 2+ bids on them. Why? Because I know that there is some demand for them (remember…not everything sells on eBay).
  4. Okay, here is where it gets interesting…I then will grab the url of the search and plug it into my keyword harvester. I will set it for 2 levels deep and start digging.
  5. The result is keywords that relate for cigars and that show some sort of demand. I will then start to build my site.

Granted, that is a dumbed down version of what I do but I hope you understand the sheer potential of keyword harvesting. And another thing, you can do this with virtually any market, any site, any niche product. The sky is the limit and the only thing that will hinder you is your imagination.
