PHPBayPro Review | Make a Build a Niche Store with Wordpress
This was actually the first experiment I did in regards to BANS. Just to give you a summary, I read this report on how this guy was making hundreds of dollars a month without having to spend a dime (more on that later). In a nutshell, what this guy was doing was building Wordpress blogs and then installing a little snippet of code to his posts which would produce the eBay feeds for his sites. Obviously, this appealed to me from the get go because it basically was using a platform that was easy to use (Wordpress) and required absolutely no need to go into the backend of your cPanel to build a database…..something that the BANS application required.
Now, I said free because you can download the free version of PHPBayPro, also known as PHPBayProLite. It is really just a toned down version of its bigger and better cousin but was good enough for me to realize the power of the plug-in. I will get into what the lite version doesn’t do later.
How to install the PHPBayPro plugin
What makes PHPBayPro so cool is the fact that there is not a steep learning curve to installing the thing. In fact, if you know how to upload files onto your site, you shouldn’t have a problem at all. But for those of you who have a problem reading the README.txt file that come with it, here it is in a nutshell….
- Purchase and download PHPBAY PRO or grab the lite version.
- Unzip the blasted plugin onto your computer.
- Upload the plugin into the plug-ins section of your site.
- Now, open the plug-in and look for a .php file named auction.php.
- Copy this file and move it into your root directory (back in the directory that has the wp_content, wp_admin, ect. folders).
How to Configure PHPBay Pro (or PHPBay Lite)
- Log into your admin panel of your wordpress blog and activate the plug-in.
- Now go to your settings page. You should see the PHPBay link. Click on it.
- You will see a number of settings that you can adjust. The one that you definitely want to adjust is the ebay partner network and campaign ID.
NOTE: If you haven’t already applied to be in the eBay Affiliate program, you will want to do this BEFORE you purchase the software. The good news is that if you live in the US, chances are great that you will be automatically accepted. As far as other countries are concerned, eBay accepts some and denies others so apply before you spend the money.
All the other settings are strictly optional but you have all sorts of things that you can do with it. For Instance:
- You can encrypt your ebay links
- You can adjust the items listed according to amount, number of bids, location of seller, ect.
- You can also decide whether you want to list the cheapest first, the auctions that are ending the first or just beginning, ect.
Once you are done, you are ready to make your first BANS page.
How to use PHPBayPro to list items
Using PHPBay Pro is so incredibly easy to use, I was dumbfounded by it. Basically what you do is go to Write Page (or Write Post). Click on HTML. From there you should find the PHP Icon. Click on it and then insert the relevant data. See the image below….
Let’s go over what all this stuff means to you.
- The keyword is pretty self explanatory. If you want items like Ugg shoes, you would most likely use “Ugg” as your keyword and the plug in will troll ebay for listings with the “ugg” in the title (or title and description if you added that feature in the settings). PHPBay also allows you to add more than one keyword so you can hone down your search.
- The second icon is “num”. This is the category that you want the plugin to search for on ebay. This is really handy when you are trying to whittle the amount of results in a broad category down. For instance, if you are selling something that could be in two complete separate categories, then you will want to use this so the plugin will only select the items in the category listed. I want to say that adding a category is highly recommended. My results from not using a category have been less than stellar. You can find them at this site. Just set your keyword, then find the category number and plug it in (eBay Category list is available at the end of this review)
- Notice, that there are two other missing categories (denoted by the “”,”"). The first one is what the number of items you would want to place on the page. I usually do something like 100 although most of my listings in my niches rarely have more than 25. The second one is the place where you can place negative keywords and isn’t available for you “lite” users. The inability of being able to post these negative keywords makes purchasing the full version a must if you truly intend on making money using PHPBay Pro.
What is all the fuss about negative keywords?
I am going to say for the record that if you aren’t employing negative keywords into PHPBay, then you aren’t doing yourself a great service. I am going to use my pinball machine site as an example.
When I first added the keywords and category, I initially got nothing more than a bunch of items to repair pinball machines. Obviously, I didn’t want this. I wanted actual pinball machines to show. I fixed this by going over the items that were listing on my site and adding all the keywords that I didn’t want to show. In other words, words like ‘repair’, ‘pinball toggle’, ‘coinbank’, ect. The result of this was that I was able to filter out all the repair items and manuels from my site and list only the things that I wanted listed. Obviously, in a niche like pinball machines, I could have set my min bid up to $200 but I wanted to show more affordable ones as well.
PHPBay Pro- The cons of using PHPBay Pro
Now, up to this point, I have shown how to use PHPBay. However, what about a little review? Well, overall, I like PhpBay Pro for what it does and how easy it is to implement it onto a site. (I will get into the other reasons why I like PHPBay Pro later).
The biggest downside to using PHPBay Pro is that the storefronts look….well, to be honest they look a bit like a blog. Now before you say….”duh! wordpress is a BLOG platform”, I want to make you aware that perception is a mother fucker. Now imagine that you are looking for a particular item, in this case a pinball machine, and you come across my site. Would a blog selling pinball machines seem as credible as a straight up site with a professional storefront? I would be willing to wager, no. That said, my pinball site is converting at a little under 40% as we speak so I can’t be too unhappy with it. However, I have to wonder what it would be if I had a professional storefront like what you get from BANS.
Of course, if you are fairly advanced, you could always gut a wordpress theme and make it look less like a blog and more like a store front.
The other thing that was a bit buggy for me was actually getting the right items to show for my keywords. At first, I couldn’t get any to show and then I was able to get a couple items to show. But once again, it all boils down to selecting the right category number for the keyword you are targeting. And while this may seem like a knock on PHPBay Pro, understand that this was the first BANS application that I tried so it is very possible that I could have had the same initial frustrations with the other two applications (Joomla and BANS) as well.
What I like about PHPBay Pro
While I hated the fact that some of my wordpress BANS sites looked a lot like blogs, there were some definite pros to going with PHPBay Pro.
- Because you are using wordpress, you can grab all sorts of plug-ins to help you with building content. What I mean by this is that you can easily use an RSS aggregator to build more content by listing other sites into it. This is definitely a plus especially if you want to create more content on the fly. You can also easily add videos, ect easily since the wordpress platform is so easy to integrate.
- Because it is a blog platform, you can take advantage of RSS feeds. I love using RSS feeds to build backlinks and create other streams of links coming back to my site. Normally, I do this when I am creating a wordpress BANS site- I make my auction listings pages first then duplicate them as posts and make it so the posts can’t be seen by search engines or create more unique content on my posts. This gives me the ability to use the RSS posts feed so that my site gets seen more often.
- PHPBay Pro is so easy anyone can create a BANS site- Unlike Joomla (which has a learning curve) and BANS (which you have to create a database for), PHPBay Pro is very easy to implement. If you have been blogging for even a limited amount of time, you will find integrating this an absolute cinch.
My Overall assessment:
I use PHPBay Pro personally for several of my websites and yes, I do make sales on a regular basis. The user interface is easy to understand and this is probably the most user friendly BANS application out there. If you have used Wordpress before then installing and configuring PHPBay Pro will be a cinch. The fact that you can use RSS feeds to promote and build backlink funnels is also a plus. The downside is that your storefront is a blog and unless you can gut a wordpress theme, then chances are it will look a lot like a blog.
Since PhpBay Pro is about $50 cheaper than its more expensive BANS cousin and it comes with a “lite” version (which you will definitely want to upgrade eventually), PHPBay Pro can be the perfect option for either those looking for a cheaper alternative or for those who simply want to test the waters before actually investing the money in this software.
