SEO and Onpage Optimization (continued)

Now that we have established that the domain name can be a huge factor in how quickly you rank in the search engines, let’s take a look at some of the other things that you can do with on page optimization and SEO.

The Title of your Website and Search Engine Optimization

In the most ideal situations, the title of your website should be your primary keyword that you are hoping to rank for. Period. Not “Felix’s Lesson in affiliate marketing”. Not “[company name]-Kentucky Real Estate”.

The less words you use on your title, the more emphasis you place on the words that are there. Does that make sense?. In other words, you could do something like “Ceramic Tile Business and HomeMaking Opportunities.”

However, if you are trying to rank for Ceramic Tile then the title juice that will come from the title above will be less than having a title like “ceramic tile”.

Unlike several years ago when you could keyword stuff the shit out of a site and get it ranked, less is more.

The Description of your Website and SEO?

Short and simple and to the point is the way to go. Once again, you want to give the search engine bots what they want. Some people try to get cute with their description but it does absolutely nothing in terms of SEO for them.

Understand that the bots themselves don’t care about cute. They are trying to categorize your site in a sea of other sites. They want to know what your site is about.

So using this logic, how would you approach this?

If your site is about Ceramic Tile, you would obviously want to include Ceramic Tile in the description. And because we want to keep it short and simple, I would probably make my description look something like this….

Bathroom Ceramic Tiles | Ceramic Floor Tiles |Ceramic Tiles for the Bathroom

That is about as short and sweet as you can get. The description will do two things. It will help the reader know exactly what your site is about (albeit in simple terms) but more importantly, it will tell the search engine bots that “hey…this site must be about….ceramic floor tiles”.

The Post Title- Perhaps the most important factor with content, SEO and your page

This is the actual title for the content in question. Once again, folks try to get cutesy with the post title because of some blog they have read that has told them to add mystery or make a list title like “top 10 reasons why ceramic tiles are better than glass tiles”.

The reason why you see so many of these “link bait” titles is because somewhere down the line someone got dugg using a cutesy title for the title that got clicked on a lot. The problem is that once traffic goes down (and it will), the poster has to come up with another cutesy title in the hopes of getting traffic. Since we are using organic searches as our primary focus, we want to give the search engines what they want to rank us.

The deal is this. To make the SE bot happy, you could simply make the title read “ceramic tiles”. Short and sweet. But what about your readers?

Now I could go on a rant about what I think about readers on most of my sites but will keep that for another day. But just for the sake of argument, let’s make our first post title reader friendly as well….

Ceramic Tiles and the 10 reasons why they are better than glass tiles

There you go….the best of both worlds.

Now, let’s take a step back from this example and look at this from the search engine bot example. We just started building our website. We chose a URL and have gotten everything picture perfect for the search engines.

The Google bot stops to pay us a visit…..

  1. First stop- the URL- BathroomCeramicTilesforSale.com

  2. Second Stop- The title of the site- Ceramic Tiles for Sale

  3. Third Stop- The description of the site-Bathroom Ceramic Tiles| Ceramic Floor Tiles | Hand painted Ceramic Tiles

  4. Fourth Stop- Page Title-Bathroom Ceramic Tiles and the 10 reasons why they are better than glass tiles

Now, tell me…before the bot even gets to the content of the page, do you think that it has got this particular website’s number? Do you think that it has categorized it correctly?

No interruptions… no links to sidetrack Google’s trusty bot…the bot has gone through just the top part of the page and yes…it knows exactly what your site is “about”.

Short and simple folks. That is what the bots love. They want to categorize you but if you don’t give them the information concisely, you risk being categorized wrongly.

Now that the bot has most likely categorized this site as a place that sells ceramic tiles, the next part is content. Since this would be considered a micro-niche site, it should be easy and I want to show you a little technique that works wonders everytime.

In fact, it is so simple, that whenever someone new comes along that is totally unfamiliar with blogging or building a SE optimized site, that they can get going straight out of the gate.
